April highlights the month of the military child and the sacrifices our service members as well as their families make in service to their country.
As we inch closer to Memorial Day, it is important that we continue to honor those who have served and are still bravely serving our nation every day. When we think of our service members, however, we tend to think only of the sacrifices made by those who actively serve. While their sacrifice is undoubtedly important, what is often overlooked is the sacrifice that their families also make. It is not unusual for military families to relocate frequently to travel with their partner who is serving. For those families with children, that means that they often travel, too. To shine a light on the children of military families, April is the “Month of the Military Child”. This is an opportunity to recognize and honor the sacrifices and resilience of military children, as well as those made by their parents.
Significance of the Month of the Military Child
The Month of the Military Child was first established in 1986 by then-Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger as a way to acknowledge the unique challenges and sacrifices military children face. They often deal with frequent relocations, long periods of separation from a parent, and emotional strain due to the uncertainty of military life. This time allows communities to show their appreciation and support for these children and their families, promoting awareness of their needs and fostering a strong sense of community.
Importance of Supporting Military Families and Children
Supporting military families and children is essential to their overall well-being and success. As they navigate the unique challenges of military life, access to resources and support systems can make a significant difference. Additionally, recognizing their resilience and sacrifices fosters a sense of belonging and appreciation, ultimately benefiting the families, the military, and the communities in which they live.
